Teach Truth Day of Action

For the past three summers, teachers rallied across the country to speak out against anti-history education bills and to make public their pledge to teach the truth. The teacher-led rallies received national media attention, providing a valuable counter narrative to the oversized coverage of the well-funded anti-CRT movement

Freedom Church of the Poor: Good Friday Walk of the Cross

Join the Open Table and Freedom Church of the Poor to walk the “Stations of the Cross” downtown and confront the reality that systemic evils lead to death at home, and in Palestine.

From The Freedom Church of the Poor: The Freedom Church of the Poor Kansas City Collective is part of the network of the Freedom Church of the Poor through the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice.  We have recently established an in-person community here in Kansas City and we meet twice a month for dinner and worship (the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Bethel Neighborhood Center and 4th Sundays of the month with The Open Table KC).  We also work in collaboration with movements for justice in Kansas City and beyond, including the Poor People's Campaign.  We are looking to become a collective of individuals, organizations, and congregations within the city who are seeking to embody the call to do justice as an expression of our faith, especially toward building the movement to end poverty led by the poor.  If you are interested or to learn more, please sign up for our email list to stay up to date about upcoming gatherings.

Talking to People we Love about Racism: a Calling-in Training

Talking to People we Love about Racism: a Calling-in Training

As white folks in our relationships with other white folks-- family, friends, co-workers, neighbors--there are moments we must confront. Sooner or later, we will face a conversation that reinforces white supremacy. A lot of the time, we understand the importance of contradicting these words and actions, but we don’t always know how to respond. There aren't many examples of how to challenge and hold others accountable. And what we often see modeled is rooted in argument and shaming, rather than a shared desire for growth. If we shut each other down, we'll never build the power we need.

To effectively grow a vast multi-identity movement to end white supremacy, we must engage and mobilize a significant number of white people to embrace and act upon an anti-racist agenda. And we must continue to love each other. This cannot happen unless we learn the difficult work of CALLING IN folks in a way that brings them to the table and engages. We want them to join our efforts to disrupt white supremacy in ourselves and the community at large.

At this 2-hour training workshop, we will dive deeper into learning what it looks like to “call in,” and we will take time to build an action plan with other folks in our movement. This training will include virtual break-out rooms for you to participate and share group discussion with other attendees, so please come prepared to participate.

Registration is Required

You will receive the Zoom link to the email you've provided about 15 minutes before the training begins.

We are looking forward to being in community with you!

Anti-Racism: On the Ballot and Off

It's election season! And SURJ KC is clear that our work will continue past November 3rd. Candidate races at the national and local level are taking lots of attention. What does the election mean for our community and anti-racism work? How can we examine ballot measure with an anti-racist lens (No on 3)? What is voter intimidation? Need another look at our SURK 2020 Election - Key Dates list for Kansas and Missouri?

SURJ KC knows that while anti-racism is on the ballot... it also isn't. Join our conversation as we discuss the positions and policies we are selecting, along with the institutions upholding white supremacy on and off the ballot.
